Sébastien  MEHAL en photo

Sébastien Mehal was born in Martinique FWI. He lives and works in Paris.

Sébastien Mehal allows us into a unique universe developed from his contemplation of the urban world. His work is characterised by a minimalist style that is then contemplated by the onlooker, revealing a certain conceptual complexity. His work also looks at the viewpoints from above, inspired by the models made by architects.

Some of his Works are characterised by the use of industrial materials as an aid – some of the structures are made from aluminium, reminding us of scaffolding in a construction site, on which are fixed paintings and other creations. The artist sometimes introduces more precious substances into his work such as bronze or marble.

Captivated, on his personal journey, by the phenomenon of town and the uniqueness of the urban world – the fast rhythm, the anonymity, the visual icons, the social codes – Sébastien Mehal takes all his inspiration. From technique (the unique paint he uses is made up of pigments used from industrial cars) to the themes, (architecture, communication, isolation of the individual, subjective viewpoints) of the modern world are at the heart of his creation. Sébastien Mehal invites the viewer to reflect on the sociological and psychological implications of existence in the urban world.

The most recent works of Sébastien Mehal are distinguishable by the spattering of liquid paint injected by huge industrial and medical syringes. The smooth textures harden into subtle, surface forms, capturing and reflecting light and introducing an effect of depth in a work that is apparently absolutely flat. The surface of the picture is animated. It is brightened by a new ‘energy’.

The work of Sébastien Mehal is not only present at major contemporary art fairs (FIAC, Art Basel, Slick Art Fair and Art Paris) but also in FRAC and Centre d’ART as well as in some national museums such as le MuseumsQuartier ‘Vienna’ in 2010. His work is also supported by various art foundations.
